A HCRRUN delegation, comprising the First Rapporteur, Dr Wiyao Evalo, and resource persons, met with the population of the Savanes Region on Friday, May 12, 2017. This information and consultation meeting formed part of the implementation of the CVJR Reparations Programme aimed at providing reparations to victims of political violence and serious human rights violations committed in Togo between 1958 and 2005. In response to HCRRUN’s invitation, the population of the region turned out in large numbers to hear the message of forgiveness and reconciliation delivered by the delegation.

Following the introductory remarks of the First Rapporteur, who presented the process leading from the Global Political Agreement (APG) to the establishment of HCRRUN, two additional presentations were delivered by HCRRUN resource persons, Mr Ouro Bossi Tchacondo and Mrs Anaté Kouméalo. These presentations focused respectively on transitional justice and the reasons for its adoption in Togo, and on the different forms of reparation.

Participants, including victims, raised a number of concerns during the discussion session, to which the members of the delegation provided detailed responses.

The Prefect of Tône, Mr Tchimbiandja Douti, welcomed the choice of his prefecture to host the meeting and commended the commitment of the Togolese Government and the efforts of HCRRUN, which contribute to healing wounds and promoting reconciliation among the daughters and sons of Togo.

The meeting was also attended by the prefects of the four other prefectures of the region, their mayors, and members of the Local Peace Committees.
