On 12 September 2025, the High Commission for Reconciliation and Strengthening of National Unity (HCRRUN) held a meeting with newly enrolled orphans of victims who lost their lives during the 2005 socio-political events, together with their legal guardians. The meeting marked their admission into the scholarship programme implemented by HCRRUN in accordance with Recommendation No. 49 of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (CVJR).

Recommendation No. 49 provides for “the award of scholarships to child victims of these acts of violence, together with annual educational assistance for a period of five years.”

During the meeting, the new beneficiaries officially received their first scholarship payment in the presence of their guardians and HCRRUN officials, marking the effective commencement of their support under the programme.

In her opening remarks, the President of HCRRUN, Mrs Awa NANA-DABOYA, encouraged the children to demonstrate discipline, commitment and perseverance in their education.

“I especially encourage the children, who are the primary beneficiaries of these scholarships, to respect their teachers and devote themselves fully to their education and personal development. The commitment made by the State to support your future must never be undermined by behaviours such as idleness, alcohol abuse or drug use.”

Under the programme, each orphan receives annual financial assistance to cover school fees, educational materials and other education-related expenses. This support is complemented by educational and psychosocial follow-up aimed at fostering their academic success, personal development and well-being.

Through this initiative, HCRRUN reaffirms its commitment to supporting victims, particularly the most vulnerable, while continuing to implement the recommendations of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission in pursuit of truth, justice, reparation and national reconciliation.

For the children who joined the programme, this meeting represents the beginning of a new chapter—one founded on hope, resilience and the promise of a better future.
