As part of the implementation of its reparations program, the High Commission for Reconciliation and the Strengthening of National Unity (HCRRUN) held, from June 16 to 21, 2025 in Guérin-Kouka (Dankpen prefecture), a compensation session dedicated to victims of intercommunal clashes that occurred in 1992 between the Konkomba and Mossi communities.

This session enabled the provision of support to nearly 900 victims, in accordance with the recommendations of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (CVJR). The initiative is part of the transitional justice framework adopted by the Togolese State, with a view to healing the wounds of the past and sustainably strengthening social cohesion.

In his opening remarks, the Prefect of Dankpen, Lieutenant-Colonel Gnakou Alowegnim, commended HCRRUN’s commitment to the reparations process. He particularly emphasized that this approach reflects the State’s determination to acknowledge the suffering endured, to repair the harm caused, and to foster a dynamic of lasting reconciliation between the communities concerned.

Present at this session, the President of HCRRUN, Mrs. Awa Nana-Daboya, recalled that the intercommunal violence of 1992 originated from misunderstandings related to the settlement of immigrant communities in the region. She stressed the need, today, to promote constructive coexistence between indigenous populations and immigrants, in a spirit of sharing and local development.

The First Rapporteur of HCRRUN, Mr. Evalo Wiyao, for his part, emphasized the symbolic and social significance of this compensation. He announced that a reflection phase would be conducted with local stakeholders, in order to consider community projects contributing to further anchoring the foundations of coexistence and social cohesion in Dankpen.

Through this action, HCRRUN continues to materialize the State’s political will to turn the page on past violence while laying the foundations for consolidated, inclusive, and lasting peace.
