HCRRUN strengthens the capacity of Local Peace Committees for peaceful municipal elections

As part of its mission to promote national reconciliation and strengthen social cohesion, the High Commissioner for Reconciliation and Strengthening National Unity (HCRRUN) launched a capacity-building session on Monday, June 30, 2025, for the Local Peace Committees (LPCs) of Togo’s 39 prefectures.

This workshop is part of the effort to prevent and peacefully manage conflicts ahead of the municipal elections scheduled for July 17, 2025. It aims to equip members of the Local Peace Committees to be effective actors in social cohesion, dialogue, and mediation.

Opening the proceedings, the President of HCRRUN reminded LPC members of the “plural, lasting, and complex” nature of the mission entrusted to them: to contribute, in their respective localities, to the promotion of living together, conflict prevention, and the preservation of peace, reconciliation, and national unity—precious assets which, as she emphasized, “are never permanently acquired.”

With just a few days until the official launch of the electoral campaign, this session comes at a strategic time. The President of HCRRUN invited participants to fully grasp the stakes of this “highly risky” period, where differences of opinion can sometimes degenerate into conflicts detrimental to national cohesion.

Led by experienced trainers in transitional justice, mediation, and non-violent communication, the training session favored an interactive approach combining case studies, group work, role-playing, and experience sharing.

Participants welcomed the HCRRUN initiative, which enables them to play their full role as peace actors in their respective localities.
