The High Commission for Reconciliation and Strengthening of National Unity (HCRRUN) resumed its activities on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, with the compensation of non-vulnerable victims from the Savanes Region. This resumption, necessitated by the health crisis caused by COVID-19, was made possible by an ordinance issued by the Head of State.
At HCRRUN headquarters in Lomé, victims who suffered harm in connection with the wildlife-related incidents are already receiving compensation. This includes the payment of the compensation amounts determined for them by the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (CVJR), as well as psychological and medical consultations.
“Today, thank God, Togo is managing the situation while observing the preventive measures in place. Consequently, in resuming these activities, we had to strictly comply with the health measures prescribed by the State. What encouraged us most, however, was the ordinance issued on July 3 extending the state of emergency in response to COVID-19. Specifically, this ordinance contains a provision authorizing the resumption of activities so that the life of the nation is not brought to a standstill, (…) and so that Institutions can carry out their activities,” emphasized the President of HCRRUN, Ms. Awa Nana-Daboya.
It should be noted that, for the time being, registered victims are being transported from the prefectures of the Savanes Region to Lomé for compensation in 60-seat buses, with 30 passengers per bus. This arrangement will remain in place pending the expiry of the 45-day extension of the state of emergency and the adoption of further measures.
