HCRRUN has been providing relief to victims in the Lacs, Bas-Mono and Vo prefectures since Friday

The fifth phase of compensation for victims of socio-political violence, which began on Monday, June 20, 2022, is continuing in the Maritime Region. Thus, after operations in Lomé with victims from the prefectures of Kévé, Golfe and Agoè-Nyivé, the HCRRUN team is continuing by setting up in Aného on June 24, 25 and 27 to enable victims or their beneficiaries to receive what is due to them. These compensation operations, led by the institution’s Second Rapporteur, Mrs Claudine Kpondzo-Akakpo, are expected to satisfy 284 victims, including 93 for the Lacs prefecture, 132 for Vo and 59 victims for Bas-Mono.

The Togolese State, it should be recalled, has committed to this reparations programme through transitional justice to ensure that citizens can forgive one another, but also to work and ensure that such acts are not repeated. According to the HCRRUN’s Second Rapporteur, the State acknowledges its responsibility for having failed in its role of guaranteeing the safety of fellow citizens, and this CVJR recommendation to compensate victims remains a symbolic act, which precisely consists in relieving the souls of those who have suffered harm of all kinds. “For nothing is worth the life of a human being, and money, whatever the amount or the value of wealth, can neither buy nor replace a life lost”.
