Peaceful Legislative and Regional Elections: The President of HCRRUN Received the AU Observer Mission
Having arrived in Togo for the dual Legislative and Regional elections of April 29, 2024, the delegation of the African Union (AU) observer mission, led by Ambassador Calixte Mbari, Head of the Democracy, Human Rights and Elections Division at the Commission of the pan-African institution, met on Thursday, April 25, with the President of HCRRUN, Mrs. Awa Nana-Daboya. The discussions focused on the mission of HCRRUN and especially the actions the institution is carrying out in the field for a peaceful electoral process.
Following the meeting, Mr. Calixte Mbari explained that their mission in Togo consists of conveying the AU’s message of peace for the organization of the ongoing electoral process and expressing to all stakeholders the AU’s wish to see these Legislative and Regional elections take place in calm and cohesion. According to him, it is necessary to work and consult so that the process succeeds and contributes to anchoring democracy and the rule of law in the country. Similarly, this election must contribute to strengthening the foundation of social cohesion and living together.
As part of our mission, we meet with all stakeholders to share their concerns, convey the AU’s message, and it is in this context that we met with the President of the High Commission for Reconciliation and Strengthening of National Unity (HCRRUN), Mediator of the Republic, in order to exchange ideas on all initiatives and prospects that can strengthen national reconciliation, consolidate peace and stability in the Togolese Republic. We were able to note that awareness-raising and monitoring activities for non-violence are being carried out in the field under the aegis of HCRRUN, and we are satisfied with these exchanges. We see that the signs are positive for us to have peaceful elections. May everything go well so that at the end, we can say that the challenge has been successfully met , emphasized the head of the AU mission delegation, Mr. Calixte Mbari.
