Established in 1977 by the late President Gnassingbé Eyadema, the 44th Tree Day was observed last Tuesday throughout the Togolese territory by citizens and all institutions of the Republic to address the complex issue of climate change and deforestation.
At the High Commission for Reconciliation and Strengthening of National Unity (HCRRUN), the tree planting operation took place in the institution’s gardens. Thus, respecting this tradition, the President of HCRRUN, Mediator of the Republic, Mrs. Awa Nana-Daboya, planted a eucalyptus tree to ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem. Following her, her colleagues also fulfilled this civic duty of the national reforestation campaign with the government’s objective of planting one billion trees by 2030.
On this occasion, Mrs. Awa Nana-Daboya commended the government’s action in making hundreds of plants available to all institutions for planting. “For HCRRUN, as we work for reconciliation and social cohesion, we can consider that this is the tree of reconciliation that we have just planted today after five years of operation, during which we have seen how we have gradually implemented the appeasement of hearts. This has enabled us to obtain the support of the population, particularly victims of violence, and we have faith that this tree will generate even more appeasement, placing us further on the path of reconciliation,” emphasized the President of HCRRUN.
