The Members of the High Commission for Reconciliation and Strengthening of National Unity (HCRRUN) received in audience, on the morning of Friday, April 19, 2019, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Togo, Mr. Damien Mama, accompanied by the UNDP Peace and Development Advisor, Mr. Christian Shingirou, as part of a working and courtesy visit.

The President of HCRRUN and the two Rapporteurs, in the presence of the Principal Assistant, Mrs. Mbrou Antoinette, held discussions with their guests on several issues relating to the preservation of peace in Togo. The discussions focused particularly on projects aimed at strengthening peace infrastructures and improving relations between civilian populations and security and defense forces in the country’s border areas.

In the face of increasingly persistent terrorist threats and recurring cross-border conflicts in the sub-region, the strengthening of peace infrastructures, particularly Local Peace Committees, is essential. This requires training and capacity-building initiatives to enable these committees to effectively fulfill their roles as mechanisms for early warning, conflict prevention, and mediation, with a view to preserving peace within the prefectures.

The two parties therefore agreed to include activities to this effect for the benefit of members of the Local Peace Committees across the country.
