Reconciliation Process in Togo: HCRRUN Has Compensated Victims Registered by CNSEI
During the week of June 21 to 26, 2021, HCRRUN continued its mission to compensate victims of political violence in Togo from 1958 to 2005 through a session dedicated to individuals registered by the Special National Independent Commission of Inquiry (CNSEI). CNSEI, commonly referred to as the Koffigoh Commission in reference to the former Prime Minister of Togo who presided over it, was tasked in the aftermath of the 2005 political violence with conducting investigations to determine the circumstances of these acts of violence and vandalism, assess the damages suffered by the State and all other victims, and initiate legal proceedings against the alleged perpetrators and instigators of these acts.
This commission registered nearly 700 victims whose names were submitted to the CVJR and transmitted to HCRRUN for compensation. The institution led by Mrs. Awa Nana Daboya thus dedicated the week of June 21 to 26, 2021, to compensating these victims.
It should be noted that certain victims who resubmitted their testimonies to the CVJR were compensated earlier among the victims registered by the CVJR and cannot be compensated twice.
Another session will be organized in the coming weeks for those absent from this first session.
