MEDIA INVITATION

The African Union Commission (Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security) and the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), in collaboration with the High Commission for Reconciliation and the Strengthening of National Unity (HCRRUN), are organizing the Sixth Edition of the Continental Forum on Transitional Justice, under the theme “Transitional Justice and Social Capital in Africa.” The forum is scheduled to take place in Lomé, Togo, from September 7 to 9, 2022.

The Forum on Transitional Justice is held annually following the inaugural meeting in 2017, as a platform for interaction and assessment of the state of transitional justice (TJ) in Africa, to identify and discuss various issues requiring further study and to fill gaps in existing knowledge. This year, the AU theme for 2022 provides an opportunity to address the interconnected concerns of development and justice, as the majority of armed conflicts today occur in countries with low levels of development. Poverty, inequality, and underdevelopment may not in themselves be the cause of armed conflicts and human rights violations, but they can be contributing or enabling factors.

WHEN: September 7 to 9, 2022

TIME: From 09:00 West Africa Time (WAT) | 11:00 SAST | 12:00 EAT

OBJECTIVES:

The sixth edition of the Continental Forum on TJ aims to achieve the following three objectives:

  • Examine the extent to which TJ processes have (or have not) integrated the aforementioned initiatives to ensure and build the Africa we want, in accordance with the AU Year theme and Agenda 2063;
  • Assess the application and applicability of transitional justice to address emerging challenges and crises such as COVID-19, climate change, intra- and cross-border conflicts, all of which pose a threat to the resilience of African populations, their food security, and their socio-economic development;
  • Generate concrete and practical ideas on how to effectively implement the AU-TJP and the study on transitional justice and human and peoples’ rights in Africa (TJ study) in order to address existing and ongoing challenges as well as new threats to peace and democratic order in Africa.

PARTICIPANTS:

The Forum will bring together AU Member States, AU organs, academics, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, representatives of civil society organizations, and other interested participants working on transitional justice issues in Africa.
