The fifth phase of the Reparations Program<\/strong> for victims of socio-political violence, launched on 20 June 2022<\/strong>, continued in the Maritime Region<\/strong> with compensation sessions held in An\u00e9ho<\/strong> on 24, 25 and 27 June 2022<\/strong>.
Following the completion of operations in Lom\u00e9 for victims from the K\u00e9v\u00e9, Golfe and Ago\u00e8-Nyiv\u00e9<\/strong> prefectures, the High Commission for Reconciliation and Strengthening of National Unity (HCRRUN) extended the compensation exercise to beneficiaries from the Lacs, Vo and Bas-Mono Prefectures<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The compensation sessions were supervised by HCRRUN’s Second Rapporteur, Mrs Claudine KPONDZO-AKAKPO<\/strong>, and were expected to benefit a total of 284 victims<\/strong>, including 93<\/strong> from Lacs Prefecture, 132<\/strong> from Vo Prefecture and 59<\/strong> from Bas-Mono Prefecture.<\/p>\r\n

The Reparations Programme forms part of the transitional justice process initiated by the Togolese State following the recommendations of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (CVJR)<\/strong>. Through this programme, the State seeks to acknowledge the suffering endured by victims, promote reconciliation among citizens and contribute to ensuring that such violations are never repeated.<\/p>\r\n

Speaking during the compensation sessions, the Second Rapporteur of HCRRUN recalled that the State recognizes its responsibility to protect its citizens and acknowledges that this responsibility was not fulfilled during the events that gave rise to the victims’ suffering. She emphasized that the reparations recommended by the CVJR are fundamentally symbolic, reflecting the State’s recognition of the harm suffered and its commitment to restoring victims’ dignity.<\/p>\r\n

“Nothing can replace the life of a human being. No amount of money, regardless of its value, can restore a life that has been lost. These reparations are therefore a symbolic act of recognition, intended to acknowledge the suffering endured by victims and contribute to their healing.”<\/em><\/p>\r\n

Through the continued implementation of the Reparations Programme, HCRRUN reaffirms its commitment to supporting victims, promoting national reconciliation and strengthening lasting peace and social cohesion throughout Togo.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
