Having arrived in Togo ahead of the dual legislative and regional elections scheduled for April 29, 2024, the delegation of the African Union (AU) Election Observation Mission, led by Ambassador Calixte Mbari, Head of the Democracy, Human Rights and Elections Division at the Commission of the pan-African institution, met on Thursday, April 25, with the President of the HCRRUN, Ms. Awa Nana-Daboya. The discussions focused on the HCRRUN’s mandate and, in particular, on the actions undertaken by the institution on the ground to promote a peaceful electoral process.<\/p>\n
Following the meeting, Ambassador Calixte Mbari explained that the AU delegation’s mission in Togo was to convey the African Union’s message of peace in connection with the ongoing electoral process and to express the organization’s wish for the legislative and regional elections to take place in a peaceful and cohesive environment. According to him, it is essential to engage in dialogue and consultations with all stakeholders to ensure the success of the electoral process and contribute to strengthening democracy and the rule of law in the country. Similarly, the elections should help consolidate the foundations of social cohesion and peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs part of our mission, we meet with all stakeholders to hear their concerns and convey the African Union’s message. It is in this context that we met with the President of the High Commission for Reconciliation and Strengthening of National Unity (HCRRUN), who also serves as the Mediator of the Republic, in order to exchange views on initiatives and prospects that could contribute to strengthening national reconciliation and consolidating peace and stability in the Togolese Republic. We noted that awareness-raising and monitoring activities aimed at preventing violence are being carried out on the ground under the aegis of the HCRRUN, and we are pleased with the discussions we had. We can see positive signs indicating that the elections can take place peacefully.
