On Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at the Fazao room of the Radisson Blu H\u00f4tel 2 F\u00e9vrier, Head of State Faure Gnassingb\u00e9 presided over the opening of the exhibition on the visit of the late President Sylvanus E. Olympio to the United States of America in March 1962. Part of the implementation of Recommendation 46 of the CVJR, which stipulates that ”  …a tribute should be paid to certain deceased figures who held important positions of responsibility and served the Togolese nation, notably A. Idrissou M\u00e9atchi, Anani Santos, Emmanuel Bodjoll\u00e9 and others…<\/em>“, this exhibition is a joint project of the HCRRUN and the Embassy of the United States in Togo.  <\/p>\n

For American diplomat David Gilmour, who discovered these documents in 2015 shortly before his arrival in Lom\u00e9 and subsequently learned of the work of the CVJR, the idea for this exhibition was conceived as a means to support the ongoing reconciliation process in Togo.  According to him, ” President Sylvanus Olympio’s visit to the United States in nineteen sixty-two is of historical significance<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

The documents on display show remarkable details, such as President Kennedy welcoming President Olympio on the tarmac at Washington DC airport, and the grand ticker-tape parade held in his honor on Broadway in New York.<\/p>\n

The HCRRUN intends to implement Recommendation 46 of the CVJR as opportunities arise. ” For the time being, the commemoration of the 57th<\/sup> anniversary of our country’s accession to international sovereignty is perceived in memory as an event linked to the statesman that was the late President Epiphanio Sylvanus Olympio<\/em>,” stated Mrs. Awa Nana-Daboya, President of the HCRRUN.<\/p>\n

The Olympio family, strongly represented at this ceremony, spoke through Gilchrist Olympio. The family expressed its happiness regarding the efforts being made to reintegrate the memory of Sylvanus Olympio into our history. According to the family spokesperson, ”  This process of commemoration must lead us in one direction: to reconcile<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

In order to bring this moment of national history to life for the entire Togolese population and to foster this spirit of reconciliation in every Togolese citizen, these works will be exhibited in the hall of the Palais des Congr\u00e8s in Lom\u00e9 until May 26, 2017. Admission is free and open to all. <\/p>\n
