These are the key outcomes of the review conference on Phase II of the reparations programme organised on Thursday by the High Commission for Reconciliation and Strengthening National Unity (HCRRUN). These results were achieved following 11 months of intensive operations, from October 1, 2018, to August 11, 2019, including eight (08) compensation sessions in Lomé and ten (10) sessions in other regions of the country.

While these achievements are significant, they do not conceal the challenges encountered during the second phase. The main difficulties stemmed from acts of fraud committed by certain individuals who attempted to receive compensation unlawfully in place of the rightful victims. In his remarks, the President of the Panel of Bailiffs assisting HCRRUN, Maître André SAMA-BOTCHO, highlighted several cases of fraud that were detected, including a case of mistaken identity in which a young man fraudulently collected compensation intended for a member of his family. Once the rightful beneficiary came forward, the impostor was apprehended and the funds were returned to the legitimate recipient.

As the conclusion of the second phase does not mark the end of the reparations process, Mrs Awa Nana Daboya reassured victims who have not yet received compensation, stating: “We wish to reassure all victims who have not yet been assisted that no one will be forgotten.
